The route starts in Sankt Niklaus and takes you through Birchmatten to climb the Topalihütte and then cross the Schölligletscher. Note that the climb to the Schöllijoch is very technical and rock falls are very frequent there. Wearing a protective helmet is strongly recommended or even a necessity. From this location you have several possible routes. Patrick chose to go to the Schöllihorn, retrace his steps and climb to the Üssers Barrhorn. Note that from the Schöllijoch you can go straight up to the Üssers Barrhorn without going through the Inners Barrhorn. He then finally came down to the Turtmannhütte (Tourtemagne hut) and finally Gruben.
